Beloved Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli devastated animation fans when they announced they would close their doors in 2014. Thankfully, Studio Ponoc (founded by Ghibli veterans Yoshiaki Nishimura and Hiromasa Yonebayashi) looks set to fill the void left behind in our hearts and on our screens. Their first outing, Mary and The Witch’s Flower, combines an exhilarating tale with their unique art and animation storytelling style, revealing the exciting and surprising adventure of Mary, an ordinary 12-year-old girl.

"a sublime blend of magic and fantasy that will sweep you along..."

Bored and lonely during a summer holiday, Mary follows an odd cat into the nearby woods where she stumbles upon a flower and then a little broomstick, which whisks her above the clouds and far away to Endor College, a school of magic! At Endor, Mary tells a lie that leads to peril, and then a promise, while discovering that all is not as it seems at the school. It isn’t long before she has to confront great danger and test her resolve.

An adaptation of the beloved novel, The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart, this film is a sublime blend of magic and fantasy that will sweep you along with its charming, heartfelt adventure. Along with the distinctive animation style that we have come to instantly recognise and love, Mary and the Witch’s Flower beautifully sparks a sense of wonder, and will surely delight both young and old.
